My friend Paul Bailey (seen above) invited me to be a part of the Boulder, Colorado community access television channel 54's annual awards ceremony as Ozzy. The plan was that we would pre-produce an "opener" of about five minutes that the audience would see projected on a large screen on the stage at the end of which I would come running out of the wings in a smooth transition from fantasy to reality and start the show. Or something. I remember the evening more for the free Fat Tire microbrew than anything else, (and a couple of girls in the lobby whose lives I was able to get back on track before they called me back in to present the award for best website). I was genuinely impressed at the quality level of local programming here in Boulder. Yet the wacked-out city council wants to shut the channel down because, among other things, people on channel 54 have the audacity to criticize the Boulder city government on a regular basis. In Boulder, local government will tolerate anything as long as they agree with it. CATV-54 is a gem that would be a shame to lose and shame on the city council for their attempts to shut the operation down in violation of the original cable provider PEL agreement. |
